Health Economics Analysis - Diabetes Mellitus Blood Glucose Monitoring

Insight

A global health care company recognized that their new technology needed an overall health economics strategy based on current methods utilized by public and commercial payors for determining cost-effectiveness to support the coverage decision making process for their product.

Strategy

The Aequitas Group developed a health economics model based on the intended use of the product and existing alternatives. In addition, a health economics protocol was developed to accompany the clinical protocol for the phase II analysis. Resource utilization data collected from this effort was used to populate the health economic model. Model results were incorporated in the presentation materials which were used for marketing and sales efforts.

Execution

A formal health economics analysis, using a Markov approach, was developed for the device. The incremental cost effectiveness was used to analyze potential health economics claims and aid in proposing revisions to the clinical study protocol. By determining that validated economic tools were needed to estimate the comparative clinical utility and total economic value of this product, The Aequitas Group was able to help payors understand the significant return on investment associated with the client’s products and this  assisted the client in obtaining appropriate reimbursement.
