Outcomes Research Plan - Gastroenterology

Insight

A new pharmaceutical company preparing to introduce a combination therapy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) requested The Aequitas Group to analyze the clinical data requirements and provide an optimal clinical trial design to support the commercialization investment options the drug would face upon launch.

Strategy

The Aequitas Group developed an outcomes research portfolio to identify the appropriate pharmacoeconomic and clinical endpoints for inclusion in pivotal trials and to obtain optimum coverage and payment. The client realized a business advantage based on our ability to quantify the potential financial benefits of various Product-Value Propositions (PVPs), including: anticipated clinical effectiveness, safety, patient preference, product positioning, and market share. In addition, a review of the potential PVPs and supportive value messages from the perspective of patient, clinical, marketing and reimbursement stakeholders all served to help the client understand the overall value of the new combination therapy.  The client was able to use the evidence to inform the level and timing of investment and perform a product forecast.  In addition, the data supported brand objectives with all major stakeholders, including third party payors in the medical community.

Execution

The data helped the client to better align the marketing teams and to optimize the labeling and promotional materials   A secondary benefit was that the portfolio, and regularly updated progress reports, could be easily reviewed by private investors, potential acquirers or licensees of the product to assist them in determining the incremental value of the new combination therapy. A successful commercial plan was subsequently developed by The Aequitas Group.
