A startup biotechnology firm developing a molecular laboratory test utilizing cutting edge techniques to aid in the treatment of various blood cancers required assistance in multiple areas of product commercialization. As current technology on the market was incomparable, the market for this product required definition. Current commercial and government payor policy had not yet been defined giving the product a tough reimbursement environment. The Aequitas Group was asked to provide insight throughout the product development process to ultimately achieve a favorable coverage policy among commercial and government payors.

Strategy

The Aequitas Group performed a comprehensive reimbursement landscape of molecular laboratory testing. Public payor coverage policy was also identified and the potential impact of such policy was assessed in the context of the client’s product. The Aequitas Group recommended that further clinical evidence be developed to support a favorable coverage decision by public payors. In the context of healthcare cost containment, a publication plan highlighting the clinical as well as economic benefits of the client’s product was developed.

Execution

The Aequitas Group’s findings led to the development of a reimbursement strategy for commercial and government payors. In addition, the manuscript developed for publication emphasized the clinical benefits of the client’s product. In combination, both of these efforts led to a successful product launch by the client.
